I actually reset the computer and re-trained the idle a second time because the first time, I kept gunning the engine to keep the car idling at stop lights I had no idea what was happening.
I think pressing the gas aggressively did actually confuse the computer the first time.
Once I learned what the problem was, I think I could have just kept driving it for a few more days and the computer would have wised up, but to save time I reset the computer. The second time, I let it painfully idle for about a half an hour the engine kept almost dying before driving it. Like you, the idle was a bit off during the next three or so days. Even for the first time I had the problem, and as you said, time seemed to be the best medicine. Idle relearn? Thread starter Wink24 Start date Jan 10, I recently changed the battery in my Mazda 5 and since then the cars idle has been pretty wild. Usually the idle after start is fine but when in drive and foot is moved from the accelerator the engine wants to run bouncing between and rpm then sometimes will die. I'm not sure if the problem is related to the battery change ie. Need to relearn idle or if this is a new problem not associated with the battery at all.
And info would be appriciated. Manual or auto? Our manual has had no problems, and I have had the battery out 3X. Since most everyone here with an has replaced their batteries, I suppose the topic would have come up by now if it were common. Does it trip the CEL? It's an automatic and I get no CEL.
In fact even when the engine is idling bad I get no light so right this second I'm letting run in drive at idle hoping the PCM will learn what idle is supposed to be again, I also let it warm up in park before doing the idle in drive.

It's easy enough to replace, but I don't want to do it, unless it is what is causing the problem for sure. If all else fails, go to the gm garage and have the idle reset. I have learned that cleaning the throttle body before starting up after a battery disconnect helps tremendously!!!
