Mazda 3 idle relearn

Idle relearn?

I have a Mazda 3, and the battery was finally done after six and a half years. When you disconnect the battery in your car, all the electronics reset.

That makes sense. What you may not know is that the computer in your car also resets itself. In the case of the Mazda 3, this means the computer has to relearn how much fuel to give the engine during idle.

So for a few days your Mazda 3 may rev between RPM when idling at stop lights. All they are doing is updating the firmware on the computer to the newer version from Mazda. This may also help. It freaked me out until the internet saved me. I actually reset the computer and re-trained the idle a second time because the first time, I kept gunning the engine to keep the car idling at stop lights I had no idea what was happening.

I think pressing the gas aggressively did actually confuse the computer the first time.

Once I learned what the problem was, I think I could have just kept driving it for a few more days and the computer would have wised up, but to save time I reset the computer. The second time, I let it painfully idle for about a half an hour the engine kept almost dying before driving it. Like you, the idle was a bit off during the next three or so days. Even for the first time I had the problem, and as you said, time seemed to be the best medicine. I have a mazda 3 and I replaced my battery too but when the car starts the battery drains and rev between RPM when idling at stop lights.

Eventually it dies up, but it starts up again when you let the car cool down for a few hours. This post is really cool. I have bookmarked it. Do you allow guest posting on your site? I can provide hi quality posts for you.

Let me know. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility problems? A few of my blog readers have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome. Do you have any tips to help fix this issue? It is typically triggered when the engine idle speed is rpm or more over the predetermined limit set by the manufacturer.

It is a generic code, which means that it has the same for the Mazda 3 as any other vehicle. Here are the typical symptoms for the There are a lot of potential causes to P The Idle Air Control Valve is often not the cause of the code. Here are some of the most common causes of P in the Mazda 3, as well as waist to troubleshoot them. Keep in mind that there are differences in model years. It would be a good idea to start by looking for a vacuum leak and move forward from there.

A leaking vacuum system will often cause the 3 to idle higher. When the vacuum system leaks, it allows extra air to enter into the combustion chamber.

This air allows for a slightly higher combustion, increases the RPM and throws the code. A vacuum leak can come from bad vacuum hosethe intake manifoldEGR Systemor about anywhere else that air flows through. Most modern fuel injected engines are equipped with an idle air control valve. Not all of them are though. A throttle body opens and closes millions of times in the life of a vehicle. All of the air that passes through it can slowly cause it to collect grime.

This grime can change the idle characteristics of the vehicle. Alternatively, if the throttle body has been damaged, it may not be properly regulating air flow, and the code may be thrown. P is a serious issue. Good luck!

Faster Idle Speed — Assuming that the code has been thrown due to a legitimate issue, you should notice the engine running faster when not pushing the gas.

It is common to feel the whole vehicle jerk when put into gear with PThe powertrain control module PCMor engine control unit ECUis a circuit board computer that stores information pertaining to different areas of your Mazda's engine. If your Mazda's check engine light or another malfunction indicator light illuminates, it is because of a signal the PCM received. The PCM will trigger the indicator light to illuminate to inform you there may be an issue with your Mazda.

Occasionally, the information remains stored with your PCM, even after the issue has been fixed, and your indicator light may remain on until the PCM has been reset. Resetting your PCM will only take a few minutes. Disconnect the "Negative" terminal clamp to your Mazda's battery.

The negative clamp should be black and marked with a "--" symbol. Idle relearn? Thread starter Wink24 Start date Jan 10, I recently changed the battery in my Mazda 5 and since then the cars idle has been pretty wild. Usually the idle after start is fine but when in drive and foot is moved from the accelerator the engine wants to run bouncing between and rpm then sometimes will die. I'm not sure if the problem is related to the battery change ie. Need to relearn idle or if this is a new problem not associated with the battery at all.

And info would be appriciated. Manual or auto? Our manual has had no problems, and I have had the battery out 3X. Since most everyone here with an has replaced their batteries, I suppose the topic would have come up by now if it were common. Does it trip the CEL? It's an automatic and I get no CEL.

In fact even when the engine is idling bad I get no light so right this second I'm letting run in drive at idle hoping the PCM will learn what idle is supposed to be again, I also let it warm up in park before doing the idle in drive.

It's SOP to let your car idle for at least 5 minutes after disconecting the battery. I'm pretty sure I did let it idle for five minutes after the install but aparently not, after I let it warm up in park at idle I then put it in drive and let it idle for another 5 minutes now it seems to be running perfect. Thanks to all that replied! Glad it worked uot. Hmm, this is exactly the problem I am having. Our Address. Kings Mills, OH Hi, I have a Mazda 3i and for the past couple of months, the check engine light has been coming on and then going off back and forth.

Then, finally, it has stayed on for over a month. It has also stalled a couple of times. I took it to Autozone and they plugged into the machine to check the engine light code. They gave me P Which through research, I found is a ghost code because my car does not have an IAC. It just refers to an RPM issue. I found some articles online that suggest my throttle body is dirty. I put a fuel injector cleaner additive into the gas tank and after about 30 minutes, the check engine light turned off and stayed off for nearly a week, but then came back on.

Do you think the problems I am having can be a result of a dirty throttle body? I have miles on the car and have never had the throttle body cleaned. In all honesty, do you think I could clean it myself? It looks easy, but looks can be deceiving lol. Is it relatively easy for someone that has no clue what they are doing? That car is a little tough to get to the throttle body to clean it.

The air intake hose is very short and stiff to move around. Even experienced people can have a problem with those. Can I go to a shop and tell them what I want done? I have just had so many bad experiences.

Here is a video on cleaning the throttle body for a Mazda 3. The car has what we call a drive by wire system. If the electronic actuator goes bad or is having a problem. The entire Throttle body would need replacement. If you need to go this route. Try a salvage yard or ebay to find one. As suggested. Clean the one you have. I believe that the Throttle body is dirty with k on it. If you do clean it. Can you get someone to help you with this. Dads are great for this. That makes it look simple so most people could do that job but for the some it may not be quite that easy.Automotive Forums.

Under most circumstances, it will relearn after just driving the car for a while, but if your car continues to experience an abnormal idle, or you just don't want to wait for it to relearn on its own, you can try this procedure.

While The negative cable is dissconnected, pump the brake pedal a few times to clear out any voltage in the system. Re-connect the negative cable after this is complete.

Turn off air conditioning controls and all other accessories. Allow engine to run for at least 5 minutes. With engine stabilized and in closed loop, the IAC motor values should be between nine to 12 counts. If not, the adjustments may be tailored by adjusting the minimum air rate screw. More throttle valve opening equals lower IAC counts. Less throttle opening equals higher IAC counts. That's a good thing to know. Here's something I found in my Haynes to help provide some more guidance.

Instead of typing a long paragraph, I'm going to put into steps. Start the engine and run it as close to idle speed as possible until it reaches its normal operating temperature. Run it for approximately 2 minutes at RPM. Drive the vehicle as far as necessary, approximately 5 miles of varied driving conditions is usually sufficient to complete the relearning process.

Robert A. Can you please tell me how to check the counts of the IAC? Pull ECM fuse for about 30 sec. So far for the last 3 years I have never had a problem doing it this way. The problem I have, after the car warms up, you can hear, and see on the tach, it doing a periodic "bounce" down from rpm, or whatever it's supossed to be idling at all the time when warm.

The car never stalls, because it recovers very quickly, but I didn't know if this was an indication of a failing IAC motor? The car never does this when given gas I have replaced the Ignition Module a year ago, as this did go bad tach would bounce all over the place at times, and stall the engine when really warm, etc How can I Trouble shoot this, or is this a classic sign of a failing IAC motor?

It's easy enough to replace, but I don't want to do it, unless it is what is causing the problem for sure. If all else fails, go to the gm garage and have the idle reset. I have learned that cleaning the throttle body before starting up after a battery disconnect helps tremendously!!!

No creeping idleA motor and gear reduction set inside the throttle body opens and closes the throttle plate to accomplish your request. It will eventually learn it on its own, but it may take over a week of driving, during which time you will experience high and low idle speeds and possibly rough idle.

Leave the jumper connected for about 2-mins. Turn off all electrical accessories before proceeding. Turn off headlights, blower motor, radio, wipers, etc. During this period the idle may be higher than normal. It should slowly drop as the engine heats up.

Watch the engine temp gauge and note when it reaches operating temp.

Then continue to let it idle for an additional 5 minutes. It will continue to adjust idle during this period. Unlike the cheaper Haynes and Chilton manuals that cover multiple year models, leaving the exact information you need to fix your car, these professional manuals cover your exact year, make, model.

Plus, they contain full trouble code descriptions and troubleshooting instructions.
