Thunderbird has an open, extensible design and program architecture. This enables people to create "add-ons" to Thunderbird. Add-ons are mostly created by Mozilla volunteers, not Mozilla staff members although some staffers write add-ons in their spare time. In general, though, Mozilla is generally not directly involved in the development of add-ons. Also, while Mozilla hosts a site where developers can distribute their add-ons, and while Mozilla reviews the add-ons that are distributed through that site, Mozilla is not responsible for supporting add-ons.
If you need help with an add-on, you should contact the add-on's author. Most Thunderbird add-ons are distributed via the Thunderbird add-ons site although authors can distribute their add-ons any way they choose. There are two ways you may install add-ons: from within Thunderbird and from outside Thunderbird. Not all add-ons have configurable options.
When they do, it is up to the add-on developer to decide how users should access these options. Often developers will make an option for their add-on under Thunderbird's Tools menu. Refer to the add-on's instructions or documentation, which are probably on the page from which you downloaded the add-on. Installed add-ons are displayed in the Extensions and Appearance panels.

To be sure there are many add-ons that will not be updated every to Thunderbird 68, but remaining with a version that is end of life is not really an option either. So perhaps you need to look at alternative add-ons.
Like Lightning, the calendar that is bundled with Thunderbird. It manages my Google calendar just fine. Thanks for the idea but restarting didn't help. Lightning is running but can't connect to my Google calendar because 'Provider for Google Calendar' is disabled as incompatible.
I only use 7 add-ins and every one is showing as incompatible. The add-ins are more important to me than having v68 hence my desire to go back to 60! Just not sure how I've been investigating and some of the add-ins DO have versions that work with 68 but none updated automatically - not sure why.

The fix is in V I don't think there is an intention to back port it to V60 at all as it is out of support.
I had no issues this morning till TB pushed the V68 update, now I have to put in google credentials every time TB opens. Not happy right now. Just a general point here why update Thunderbird 68 when the new version is worse than the last one. I've lost all the add ons which made the old version useful.

This article shows you how to install an add-on to your Thunderbird. In an ideal world, all the add-ons you would want are officially vetted, approved, and can be found on the official website, addons. For add-ons that fall into this category, you can simply go to the Add-ons Manager tab in Thunderbird by clicking the menu button followed by Add-ons and click on the Extensions panel on the left to display the search box in the top-right corner.
Enter the add-on's name or enough of it to limit the search results returned to a manageable number and press Enter Return or click the magnifying glass icon. Once you have done your first search, a new Search category appears in the panel on the left. You can keep refining your search until you find what you want. Once you locate an add-on you like, click on Installwait for it to be downloaded, then click on Restart now if prompted.
You may have been given an URL for the add-on, or the add-on you want isn't on the "official" page. Searching for it, as shown above, doesn't locate the add-on. Visit the webpage in your browser, right-click the download link with your mouse, select Save Link As… and save the XPI file to a location on your computer that is easy to remember.
As the download is temporary, it is suggested you use either your Downloads folder or your desktop. You will be invited to download and save the file. Most browsers have a default download location. Make a note of where it downloads to, and what it's called. Some add-on files may have silly names like "latest Open the Add-ons Manager tab in Thunderbird.

The port of this add-on to Thunderbird 68 has been greatly accelerated thanks to the minority of users about 0. It contains no added functionalities, it's only a full GUI aesthetic customization. This is also valid if you use an older version of an operating systems listed on this page.

The complexity of the add-on determines how it is affected - many add-ons are not heavily affected, some not affected at all. Some add-ons do not need any code changes, and some only trivial or minor refactoring or name changes. Some need to adapt to changed interfaces. Some only need changes to startup and intialization, others may need more extensive changes. A non-exhaustive list of of things to be modified is below. Every beta from 57 to 60 delivered changes.
So for example if your add-on is compatible with beta 58 you may still need to make further changes. Example changes to version 59 involve bug default preferences, and bug menu to access add-on options and tab options. Why : Firefox platform have disabled "legacy" add-ons in Firefox 57 that is, all add-ons not based purely on WebExtensionsso Mozilla removed some core interfaces which are also used by Thunderbird.
However, unlike Firefox, Thunderbird has not killed legacy add-ons, because the Thunderbird team lessened the impact of those changes on Thunderbird add-on developers, where possible. WebExtension aka futures: Thunderbird 60 does not have WebExtensions support. Going forwards, bug will add WebExtension support in Thunderbird beta 63, while maintaining "legacy" add-ons and hybrid add-ons. Binary add-ons are no longer supported by the Mozilla platfrom since Thunderbird Binary add-ons were already discontinued in Firefox 41, see here.
